BREAKING THE WINTER BLUES

Believe it or not – this is my third edition of Breaking The Winter Blues. In 2017, I began to share the ways I combat my seasonal case of the winter blues. Breaking the winter blues can be tough – the combination of shorter days and colder temperatures can effect the best of us. Formally known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, symptoms appear in late fall with feelings of moodiness, low energy, and depressed emotions. This year has been especially tough with social distancing from loved ones and so much uncertainty in the air. I hope this year's tips serve you well x
TIP ONE
Let's start small. Change your phone’s background image to a destination you want to visit or a piece of art you admire. Display a prayer that you hope to manifest as the screensaver on all your devices. Fix your vision, literally. National statistics show ‘Americans check their phones once every 10 minutes, up to 96 times per day.’ Spending this much time on our phones can seem shocking – tapping in is a mindless act. Truth be told our devices are how we communicate with the world. So, let's be mindful and inspired when shamelessly scrolling.
TIP TWO
Take it easy on your eyes! Digital screens do more harm than you realize. Protect your eyes from unnatural light exposure when using cellphones, televisions, and computers. Headaches and blurred vision are signs that your eyes need some care. By simply adjusting the brightness on your devices can help improve eyesight and sleep patterns. I regularly use blue light glasses when working on the computer and lubricating eye drops when watching television. I suggest shutting down all devices before bed. Take a moment to breathe and clear your mind.
TIP THREE
Laughter is the best medicine! During this time at home I’ve been re-watching my favorite childhood cartoon shows. The current cartoon binge is Hey Arnold. The adult humor is hilarious and the jazzy soundtrack is something my grown-up self appreciates. The best part about watching my favorite cartoon shows are the memories that come to mind. I then remember to text my siblings and FaceTime with friends. Mood-boosting and family friendly – you can’t go wrong with the classics.
TIP FOUR
Each morning my pup and I go on our daily trek to clear our minds, explore, and get some much needed fresh air. The cool air makes me feel refreshed and ready for the day. Moving our bodies whether indoors or outdoors is essential to mental health by reducing stress and fighting fatigue. If you're unable to get around, consider cracking a window for air circulation in your home and to get some fresh air in your lungs. Do what's right for you.
TIP FIVE
Read intentionally! Your favorite novels provoke food for thought, getting you to think beyond your limits and imagination. My intentional reads include: The Last Lecture, Tuesdays With Morrie, and Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children. These reads provide me a form of mediation, keeping me engaged and at peace. Best described as inspiring, encouraging and worth every single word, twist, and turn. Step away from today's troubles and dare to dream.
TIP SIX
Discovering new tea brands, flavors, and mixtures. I stumbled across a wonderful holistic tea by the name of Buddha Tea, a tasty wellness tea. Offering crystal infused chakra-balancing teas and Ashwagandha CBD tea – add a little honey and lemon, she'll be your favorite drink. Soothing anxious nerves and warming up a cold nose, let your tastebuds guide you!
Breaking The Winter Blues is no joke. You never know what the next person is going through. So, please be kind to yourself and others. May our minds flourish and faith carry us into a prosperous new year. I'm celebrating the first year of the GOODVIBESONLYIX website. I’m so grateful for this space in time. My work has been my blessing. All praises to the most high – for you are the reason for the season.
Sending you all peace and health x
